About me

Drewry is a partner of Fortior. Prior to joining Fortior he was a partner at a Los Angeles based (US) law firm specialising in the Korean shipbuilding market. Drewry lived in Seoul for nearly three years and was seconded to a major Korean shipbuilder during this time. Drewry also worked at Hill Dickinson in London where he was engaged in shipping work including cargo and charterparty claims and general international commercial litigation and arbitration.

Inspired by a wish to change the way law is practiced, improve efficiency, harness technology and provide value for money to clients, Drewry recently completed a masters at the University of Barcelona, in Digital Solutions Development. Drewry is always willing to discuss new ways of billing and new ways of managing work processes using modern project management techniques and technology.

Drewry is admitted to practice in England and Wales.

Representative experience
  • Headed all legal aspects of the completion of an offshore project over 4 years involving the construction of a floating, production, storage and offloading unit (FPSO); managed all legal aspects of construction, including price negotiations and disputes, insurance and finally towage of this vessel from Korea to Europe. Represented the client as partner in charge in repeated negotiations with a state oil company.
  • Advised a Korean shipyard on all aspects of sale and purchase contracts for various vessels, including oil/product tankers, bulk carriers, container vessels and naval vessels. Drafted ancillary documents such as guarantees and broking contracts. Engaged in transactional work involving vessels such as novations and assignments.
  • Advised on supply contracts for the array of components required to build vessels and managed disputes with suppliers, taking them to court or arbitration where necessary.
  • Handled High Court litigation concerning an option agreement under which the buyer of a number of vessels alleged a Korean yard had repudiated and which the buyer claimed should allow them to claim damages of approximately US$ 178 million.
  • Advised on a claim arising out of a brokerage dispute involving an off-shore equipment broker alleging non-payment under a brokerage contract for a deep-sea vessel worth approx US$ 700 million.
  • Defended a US$ 16 million claim against a Romanian oil distributor client arising out of a series of sub-sales of oil using letters of credit.
  • Pursued defaulting Turkish buyers of two vessels in respect of outstanding instalments totalling US$ 6 million under a performance guarantee, involving substantial asset tracing work.
  • Defended shipbuilder against warranty claims for alleged faults with vessels, such as alleged faults with a rudder of one vessel (US$ 3 million approx) and the propeller of another ($US 2 million).
  • Advised Japanese shipowner clients in dispute with a major Swiss commodity trading house and charterer in a dispute arising out of alleged damage to oil cargo as a result of issues arising out of tank cleaning. This matter which involved a number of vessels also involved large off-hire claims being passed up the charter chain.
  • Advised many major P & I Clubs and their members on bill of lading disputes concerning a variety of cargos and time and voyage charter party disputes in London LMAA arbitration.
  • Advised Greek vessel owners in a High Court collision claim that took place in the Mediterranean.
  • Advised Japanese owners in a High Court collision claim that took place in the Atlantic.
  • Advised owners in claims arising out of a grounding in South American inland waters which occurred whilst the vessel (a bulker) was turning in a river.
  • Advised tug owner clients on towage contracts and disputes.
