About me

Erlan is Fortior’s CIS-qualified associate. Erlan specialises in arbitration and advisory work in relation to shipping, commodity trading and financial transactions. Throughout his career, Erlan acted for a number of oil and food trading companies, financial institutions and public bodies.

Prior to joining Fortior, Erlan practiced law for four years in Central Asia and Russia, working in private practice, at the Bishkek’s prosecutor’s office, and in courts dealing mostly with cases involving fraud, corruption and bribery. Having decided to focus his career on international arbitration and commodity trading, Erlan trained in a law firm in Chicago and worked for a boutique practice in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Erlan holds two LL.M. degrees from the University of Fribourg, one in Compliance and the other in International Business Law.

Representative experience
  • Representing a Russian oil trading company in a contractual dispute under the Swiss Rules of International Arbitration;
  • Representing a Belarusian commodities trading group in an arbitration against a Vietnamese counterparty in relation to the latter’s failure to accept delivery of contractual goods;
  • Advising a Latvian group of companies on establishing a tax-effective holding structure in Switzerland;
  • Advising a Russian client in relation to financial instruments issued by one of Geneva’s oldest banks;
  • Representing a large Russian dairy products company in proceedings to enforce a foreign arbitral award in Switzerland;
  • Advising a Russian state-owned energy distribution company in an arbitration against a Chinese company in relation to late delivery of the contractual cargo.
